Anthropic Merges Claude Cowork and Chat Into One Claude, Adds Docs, Slides, Design in Beta

What happened

Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that Claude Cowork and regular chat have merged into a single Claude, so there’s no longer a mode to choose between for different kinds of tasks. The announcement opens plainly: “Bring a quick question, or hand over a report due at noon, and Claude takes it from there, even after you’ve closed your laptop.”

Anthropic explains the reasoning behind the merge: it built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design as a separate place for visual work, but people used both and told the company the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. Anthropic’s fix was to “stop making you choose,” giving access to all of it “from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have.”

A new output picker in the compose box

The most visible change in the new interface is an Output button in the compose box, letting you choose exactly what kind of result you want up front.

• Claude Docs (Beta) for writing documents collaboratively within a conversation
• Claude Slides (Beta) for building presentations
• Claude Design (Beta) for visual work, previously a separate standalone tool, now callable from any conversation (the existing standalone version still works too)
• Artifact, letting Claude pick the most appropriate format itself

The first three options are all in Beta.

Editing, presenting, and exporting built in

Anthropic describes it this way: by the time you’re at your desk, the report you handed off is waiting as a doc with notes from your teammate, and the slides are ready to open, adjust, and download as PowerPoint. Announced capabilities include

• Editing content Claude generates directly within the document
• Leaving comments for Claude to act on
• Dragging elements around within a slide deck, built in
• Presenting straight from the chat, or exporting to PowerPoint or PDF
• Scheduling recurring tasks, and choosing notification preferences, ask before every action, or check in only when something goes wrong

Everything that already existed in Cowork, chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills, carries over and keeps working. And when something is unclear, Anthropic states plainly: “Claude asks. You keep the final say.”

Rollout timeline

Anthropic is rolling this out to Pro and Max plans first over the coming weeks, across the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile. Team and Free plans follow next. Enterprise customers will get at least 30 days’ notice before any changes take effect.

Editor’s take

To me the biggest shift is not having to think about which app a task belongs in anymore. Before, a big piece of work meant opening Cowork, and visual work meant opening Design separately. Now everything lives in the same place, short questions and long tasks start the same way, and Claude takes it from there. The new output picker (Docs, Slides, Design) is also a nice fit for anyone who already knows exactly what format they want, rather than waiting for Claude to guess.
