Claude Code desktop now has an Auto-continue when limits reset checkbox. Turn it on and work resumes on its own once your usage limit resets.

What’s changing

ClaudeDevs, Anthropic’s official account for developers, announced on 14 August 2026 that Claude Code desktop now has a new checkbox called Auto-continue when limits reset.

When a session hits your usage limit mid-task, a “Usage limit reached” screen appears. Tick this checkbox, and once your limit resets, Claude Code automatically continues right where it left off, no need to come back and type “continue” yourself.

Illustration of a three-step flow. The first node shows a pause icon representing hitting a usage limit, connected by a dashed line to a second node showing a clock icon representing waiting for the limit to reset. A solid arrow then points to a prominent orange circle with a play icon and a checkmark badge, representing work resuming automatically the moment the limit resets

How it used to work

Before this feature, once a session hit its usage limit mid-task, Claude Code would just stop and wait. Someone had to come back and type “continue” to resume it. If nobody was around, say it was left running overnight or you’d stepped away to do something else, that time was simply lost until someone returned to the screen.

People who ran into this often had to reach for third-party auto-retry scripts, and several exist across the developer community.

How to use it

When the “Usage limit reached” screen appears, there’s now an “Auto-continue when limits reset” checkbox you can turn on. Tick it, close the screen, and go do something else. Once the reset time hits, Claude Code picks the work back up on its own, no further typing required.

The writer’s take

Small features like this are ones a lot of people have been waiting on, in my view. Before this, anyone who ran into usage limits regularly had to go find a third-party script to handle auto-retry themselves. Now it’s a checkbox built right in.
